Sustainable Tourism applied for some accommodation and travel facilities in Vietnam

Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world. Along with the development speed as well as the socio-economic benefits, today the tourism industry is also one of the causes of negative impacts on the cultural and social environment on a global scale. With the main objective of mitigating impacts, Responsible Tourism has been proposed and executed in a number of tourism businesses in 4 cities/provinces of Hanoi, Hue, Quang Tri and Hoi An – Quang Nam.

The project is hosted by SNV (Netherlands Development Organization) cooperating with ENERTEAM (National Consultant) to execute related activities in Vietnam in 2011.

1. Project information:

– Overall objective:

Stimulate economic development and reduce poverty in Vietnam through sustainable development in tourism

– Specific goal:

  • Promote social responsibility in tourism
  • Facilitate tourism businesses to establish supply chains related to the poor
  • Support tourism businesses to be eligible for responsible tourism certification
  • Support tourism businesses to link domestic markets and other businesses based on responsible tourism products
  • Reduce environmental impacts

– The main partners involved in the project implementation:

SNV Netherlands Development Organization is the project owner, responsible for training to raise awareness about responsible tourism
ENERTEAM National consultant directly coordinates to provide businesses with environmental solutions, resources management and energy saving, support businesses to build a sustainable supply chain in business

 

2. Project deliverables:

– Tourism businesses including accommodation facilities and travel facilities have raised awareness about resources management and energy efficiency such as how to reduce water use

– Establish green offices at tour operators. Tour guides, tourism managers need to be trained on how to attract visitors in protecting environment and building responsible tourism development, such as

– Develop a guidebook to instruct accommodation facilities and travel facilities how to implement responsible tourism practices, for example:

  • DMZ Hotel staffs (Hue) discuss on identification of environmental issues, resource management and energy saving, and propose implementation solution
  • Aribank Hotel staffs present best practices in the room area

The project was successfully executed as well as specially raising awareness on sustainable development for tourism accommodation and facilities in some pilots cities/provinces of Vietnam as well.
