WHY SHOULD WE SET UP THE ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN LINE WITH ISO 50001?
Normally for all enterprises, the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, etc. are very familiar and so popular, BUT today ENERTEAM want to introduce one special ISO that is really important and essential for enterprises, the “ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EnMS) IN LINE WITH ISO 50001”.
1. WHAT IS ENERGY?
What is energy? – Energy can be understood simply as: electricity, fuel, steam, heat, compressed air and other similar forms, which are used for production and living.

Energy includes two main types:
- Non-renewable energy (coal, gasoline, oil)
- Renewable energy (biogas, solar power, wind, biomass energy).
2. WHY SHOULD WE SET UP THE EnMS IN LINE WITH ISO 50001?
The scarcity of energy resource and energy price is growing up, which impacts directly to production cost and profit of enterprises. Therefore, setting up the EnMS in line with ISO 50001 can brings enterprises some basic benefits as follows:
3. WHICH SCALE AND TYPE OF ENTERPRISES SHOULD SET UP THE EnMS?
- The EnMS can be set up for ALL SCALES and ALL TYPES of production (industry, building, transportation, etc.)
- DESIGNATED ENERGY CONSUMERS (enterprises with energy consumption that is converted to equivalent TOE ≥1000 for industrial production facilities or ≥500 for buildings – related Ref. link: http://enerteam.org/quy-doi-nang-luong-sang-toe.html for better understanding what TOE is?) that is encouraged to set up the EnMS. This will not only contribute to reduce energy consumption but will also ensure compliance with the requirements of the law on “Energy saving and Energy Efficiency”.
4. BASIC STRUCTURE OF EnMS IN LINE WITH ISO 50001
As same as other management systems (such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001), the EnMS in line with ISO 50001 is based on a continual improvement framework under the Plan – Do – Check – Act (PDCA) together with energy management into enterprises’ production situation. The following is for more illustration.

5. WHAT RESOURCES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR ESTABLISHING EnMS IN LINE WITH ISO 50001?
Some basic resources should include when setting up the system:
| Human resources | It’s best to have the participation from all departments/ divisions of the enterprise in setting up, operating and maintaining the system. Manpower can also be outsourced during the initial set-up phase of the system. |
| Cost | To achieve target of energy savings, investment for the system is required. Investment cost can be as simple as measuring equipment installation cost, training cost, cost of implementing identified energy-saving solutions, consulting cost, etc. |
| Equipment | The system must have a minimum of energy measuring equipment at production areas or facilities with high energy consumption. |
6. HOW MUCH ENERGY SAVING WHEN SETTING UP THE EnMS IN LINE WITH ISO 50001?
The value of savings depends on the enterprise’s current situation. However, according to the actual experience of ENERTEAM when implementing the EnMS for the enterprises, the savings ranges from 2% – 6% of total energy consumption.
